Walking and Scenery

The surrounding loch and mountain scenery is absolutely superb, and there is easy access to all grades of walking and climbing for the energetically inclined. Easy lochside and riverside walks start right on the doorstep, and a wealth of more challenging hillwalking is available within a few miles, with the Five Sisters of Kintail and Glenshiel to the South, the Torridon Range in the North, and the Cuillin of Skye to the West . . . to name but a few. You'll find a guide book to walks in the local area in each house.

If you find that you've left anything at home you'll find a great range of quality branded outdoor clothing and equipment at 914 Outdoor in Ardelve.

Places to Visit

Eilean Donan Castle - Dornie's most famous landmark is the world-renowned Eilean Donan Castle, star of screen, calendar and shortbread box. The castle is only a few minutes walk from the village centre.

Iron Age Brochs at Glenelg - Brochs are prehistoric fortified tower dwellings and there are three in a reasonable state of repair at Glenelg, two of them right by the roadside. They make a fascinating visit.

Ferry to Skye - One of our favourite trips (Easter to October) is to cross on the 6-car ferry from Glenelg to Skye, sometimes an adventure in itself as the short journey often encounters strong tides. You can visit an otter sanctuary on the Skye side before returning by ferry to Glenelg.

You can go horse-riding locally, and visit Lochalsh Woodland Garden at Balmacara. There are interesting glass-bottom boat trips from Kyle of Lochalsh and seal trips at Plockton, each only a few minutes' drive away.

You'll find a fuller list of places to visit and things to do in each of the houses.
